Our Why
A Shared Mission for a Sustainable Future
Our Mission: The Greensboro Science Center’s conservation mission is to preserve species and habitats through on-site programs, community awareness, field studies, and fundraising for local and global conservation efforts.
Our Vision: Conservation and preservation of animals and habitats can only be realized by altering individual habits and behaviors and by working collaboratively with organizations, academics, and governing bodies to better our environment.

Conservation Events
Each year, the GSC hosts events and programs that directly support our Conservation Fund, which fuels both local and international projects.
Local Impact. Global Connection.
Conservation in Action
The GSC protects native wildlife and contributes to field conservation across the globe. From restoring pollinator habitats to studying endangered species, our conservation team works to preserve biodiversity and inspire change.
Freshwater Mussel Propagation
Our on-site lab raises native mussels for reintroduction into NC streams, supporting the state’s conservation action plan.
Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center & Butterfly House
Seasonal exhibit that raises monarchs, supports pollinator education, and releases tagged butterflies for migration research.
Pollinator Pockets
Native plant gardens across our campus and Country Park that sustain butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
Community Composition & Mitigation Study
Research with NCWRC and UNC tracking species response to land and water changes.
Island Restorations: Mona Island & Virgin Islands
Partnering with Island Conservation to restore habitats for endangered iguanas and boas.
Bioacoustics Research
Using sound technology to study bats, rodents, and lemurs, supporting noninvasive conservation methods.
Everyone Can Make a Difference
Community Science
The GSC participates in community science programs, including ecoExplore, The Box Turtle Connection, NestWatch, MonarchWatch, and NABat, connecting local citizens to real conservation research.
