Opening Date: June 29, 2013
We are excited to announce the grand opening date of the Carolina SciQuarium! The doors will open to our newest attraction at 9:00am on Saturday, June 29 to the general public. The aquarium will be open daily from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Admission to the SciQuarium will be included with general admission or membership.
Several species of fish, including Four-Eyed Butterflyfish, Reef Butterflyfish, Stingrays, Lookdown Fish and Puffer Fish (pictured, right) are currently undergoing their quarantine period behind the scenes of their exhibits. Once the mandatory quarantine period is over, they will be released into their new exhibits to begin acclimating to their new homes.
The 22,000 square-foot, museum-aquarium complex will be North Carolina’s first inland aquarium and the first aquarium in the U.S. to be LEED-certified. The Carolina SciQuarium is the first expansion project in the Center’s $32 million, three-phase Science City, USA Master Plan that unites the finest features of an aquarium, zoological park and science museum in one attraction.
Designed by Greensboro Science Center (GSC) employees, Moser-Mayer Phoenix & Associates and design firm Cambridge Seven Associates, the Carolina SciQuarium will feature an assortment of unique endangered species and water-dependent animals. There are six large exhibits that feature African penguins, fishing cats, Asian small-clawed otters, an Amazon River mixed species habitat, a stingray touch tank and a 100,000 gallon Shark Reef filled with three species of sharks, two southern stingrays, an eagle ray, three moray eels and hundreds of fish of every shape, size and color. With new animals arriving each week, GSC staff is working hard to prepare for the grand opening on June 29.
Visitors to the Carolina SciQuarium will have the opportunity to learn more about the animals, their habitats and the science behind what it takes to create and run this complex “living system” at hi-tech “SciPods” located throughout the aquarium. From animal adaptation to animal husbandry and aquatic veterinary care, the SciPods bring a unique educational, science-based experience to the aquarium all ages will enjoy.
For an additional fee, visitors can also take behind-the-scenes tours that provide even greater insight about the animals and the operations of this world-class facility.
Admission to the Carolina SciQuarium will be included with general admission.
Greensboro Science Center Members will be admitted to the SciQuarium free of charge.
