Teacher’s Assistant Program

“Summer is a time I look forward to simply because I love being able to volunteer as a Teacher’s Assistant. Watching ten to fifteen anxious faces at the beginning of the week transform into faces of sheer excitement beings me great joy.”

-Lexi John, Teacher’s Assistant since Summer 2013, Currently volunteers as a Zoo and Aquarium Docent

Applications for Summer 2017 are now closed. GSC staff are reviewing applications. Candidates will be emailed by Friday, April 7 at 5pm with information about the next steps in the process.

Teacher’s Assistants are responsible for helping the teachers with classroom activities and ensuring the safety and well-being of each child. Be a kid again as you make bottle rockets, study animal behavior, or practice kitchen chemistry!

  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to class time to help with camper drop off
  • Help instructor supervise children on museum grounds, nature trails, etc.
  • Assist instructor and help students with crafts and snacks
  • Take children to the restroom when necessary
  • At end of class, help children gather belongings and wait for their parents
  • Assist instructor with cleanup of classroom after crafts and at the end of class
  • Assist teacher in ensuring all children wash hands after touching animals and before snack time
  • Other duties as requested by instructor

Our summer camps run from June14 to August 11. Teacher’s Assistants are required to sign up for at least three one-week sessions of camp. During each one-week session, our Teacher’s Assistants are scheduled for the same shift each weekday. This provides stability for the children in the classes because they’ll meet the teacher and all of the assistants on Monday when they arrive in class. It also ensures that our Teacher’s Assistants are aware of how the activity done in camp on Wednesday relates to the one done on Monday.

Teacher’s Assistants can be scheduled morning-only or afternoon-only. There are limited opportunities to stay through lunch to assist with our Lunch Bunch program. Volunteers should be picked up promptly at the end of their shift. The Greensboro Science Center’s policy is that children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We cannot provide supervision outside of their scheduled volunteer time.

The schedule for summer will be completed and sent to all selected Teacher’s Assistants by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, May 31. We make the schedule based on the availability that you provide us in the Teacher’s Assistant Survey, to be completed after May 12.

Morning Class: 9:00-12:00
Arrive by 8:30 and stay until 12:15

Lunch Bunch: 12:00 to 1:00
This is an option for camp students who are taking morning and afternoon classes. Campers are supervised as they eat their lunches. Campers watch movies, play games, and visit the park when they’re done eating. There are only six Lunch Bunch volunteer slots per week. If you are interested in staying for Lunch Bunch, please indicate that on your application. Lunch Bunch volunteers will be scheduled until 1:15. We will try to give everyone interested in helping with Lunch Bunch the chance to do so at least one week during the summer.

Afternoon Class: 1:00-3:00 — some LEGO classes end at 4:00
Arrive by 12:30 and stay until 3:15 or 4:15, depending on the class

Extended Day: 3:00-4:30
This is an add-on for camp students whose parents cannot pick them up until later in the day. The students do craft activities, play games, watch movies, etc. Space for volunteers is limited to one opening per week. The Extended Day volunteer for the week will be scheduled until 4:45. If you are interested in staying for Extended Day, please indicate that on your application.

No. In your Teacher’s Assistant Survey, you will be able to pick your top three choices for class topics such as animals, geology, marine life, chemistry, engineering (LEGO robotics), physics, and nature. You will also be able to indicate the three age groups you’re most interested in helping. For instance, you may be more comfortable working with the younger children. We will make every effort to place Teacher’s Assistants in classes that match their interests as well as their comfort level with different age groups. The schedule will be completed and sent to all selected Teacher’s Assistants by 5:00pm on Wednesday, May 31.
The Teacher’s Assistant program officially ends on August 11. It is a summer-only program. Teacher’s Assistants can apply to transition into the Robotics Young Adult Mentor (YAM) Program to assist with our robotics leagues and classes during the school year.
