The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) offers a two- to four-week externship program in exotic animal medicine for vet students in good standing in their third or fourth year. The veterinary team consists of one full-time veterinarian, Dr. Sam Young, and a full-time veterinary technician, Sam Andreski.
Student applicants should have a strong interest in exotic medicine and conservation. They must be enrolled in their third or fourth year and be in good standing at the time of their externship. Proof of a negative tuberculin skin test within 6 months of the start date is required due to the fact that work with primates is likely during any 2 to 4 week rotation block. Excellent work ethic, communication skills, and a positive team-oriented attitude are expected. Externs are responsible for finding their own housing and transportation for the duration of the externship. The externship is unpaid and comes with no promise of future employment.
Per CDC guidelines, it is highly recommended that applicants for this position are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To learn more about our COVID-19 safety procedures, visit our website at www.greensboroscience.org.
To apply, please submit a letter of intent, CV, and one letter of recommendation from a faculty member to firstname.lastname@example.org. Letter of intent should include the student’s available/requested dates (a minimum of three rotation blocks listed in order of preference). You’ll find the rotation blocks in the link at the end of this email. Please combine all three documents into one document with a file name in the following format: John_Smith_Externship.
Once your application materials are received by our Volunteer Office, they will forward them to our Veterinary Team for approval. Once approved by our Veterinary Team, our Volunteer Office will send you information about your next steps, including required forms, TB test, and background check. Once all of those have been received, you will be able to confirm your rotation block(s).
Below, please use these links to access additional information about the program, including our full externship program description and calendar where we track the rotation blocks we offer throughout the year and current student interest and confirmations for those blocks. You will need to access that calendar in order to tell us the three blocks you are interested in when you submit your application materials.
Vet shadow opportunities will resume Summer 2022.
