Up and Atom! Science at Home

Turn a day off from school into a day of fun learning - from the comfort of your home “lab.” We’ve created live, interactive virtual workshops that are totally COVID-proof. We’ll lead you and your kids through science activities based on common items you’ll assemble from our materials list. Each session will also feature a sneak peek in our Zoo that supports the theme, and we’d love to see some of the extension challenges that you create!

Light supervision is required for younger kids, suggested for the older group.

Monday, January 18: Kitchen Chemistry

Milk for breakfast, but how about for science? Save a little milk for experiments that explore surface tension and make casein plastic. Different ages will also investigate the properties of gases with yeast, create an exothermic reaction of foaming fun or set up a winter chromatography project to look for plant pigments! Then, visit with our keepers in our commissary to learn how we “cook” for our animals!

  • Session A: Ages 5-7, 10am - 10:45am
    Session B: Ages 8-11, 2pm - 2:45pm
  • As part of our Science for All initiative, this program is a pay-as-you-wish option. Minimum: $5

The list of materials and Zoom link will be emailed upon registration.

Participants will explore the SCAMPER method of creative problem-solving as they use everyday items to design, build, and engineer their own can-cassowary transport!
