Education Internship

• Learning how non-formal education complements and supports formal or traditional education by correlating to and going beyond Common Core and Essential Standards.
• Developing public speaking and presentation skills (key skills in any profession!) by engaging visitors of all ages in the aquarium through informal talks at an array of animal exhibits.
• Assisting in our camps and classes in a wide variety of subject areas and science based activities.
• Learning about the animals here at the Greensboro Science Center from the cute and cuddly to the creepy crawly.
• Observing distance learning science presentations on subjects ranging from Animal Adaptations to Electricity and Magnetism.
• Creating your own education-based project based on your interests such as a game, scavenger hunt, or other educational resource.
• Researching information and creating documents on Word, Excel, and Publisher.
• Assisting with winter break camps, spring break camps, or summer camps as scheduling permits.
• Learning how to correctly and safely use office equipment like a laminator, copying machine, and button maker; because yes, these too are important life skills!
• Pitching in with random projects like painting, cleaning skulls, cutting yarn, counting penguin feathers, wearing a shark mascot costume, or setting out minnow traps.
• Assisting with and preparing for special events such as World Oceans Day, Shark Week, Science Festival, and Pajama Jam.
• All interns will need to complete an independent project based upon the following:
  • Design and present a “Science on the Spot” program
  • Develop and facilitate a Special Event (ie. World Rainforest Day, World Snake Day, International Flamingo Day, World Shark Day, etc.)
  • Design and present an experiment or teaching tool to be utilized in camps or classes
  • Design and present a supplemental event table for an existing event (ie. Pajama Jam, Shark Week, Red Panda Day, Star Party, etc.

On-site scheduling can be arranged around the intern’s class schedule. Education Interns are typically on-site a minimum of two days a week, around four hours each day. We require a minimum of 120 hours to complete an internship. Weekday morning availability is required. A minimum of 120 hours is required during that time frame for the successful completion of a non-animal care internship. Please note that in order to receive credit as a GSC intern, you must complete that number of hours regardless of any school or program requirements which may be less than that.

• Interns must be able to work in a team environment as well as independently.
• Interns must have good communication skills and are comfortable talking with guests of all ages in a variety of settings.
• Interns are looking to further your teaching, engaging, and presentation skills, but already enjoy talking with people.
• Interns show a desire to learn about informal science education and how we connect with general visitors, members, and school groups.
• Interns must have a college-level background (or are working on one) in teaching, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or other related science programs. Preference is given to students currently enrolled in school.
• Interns must be reliable and can commit to at least 120 hours with us.
• Interns must take pride in what you do and want to make a difference in the world through science education.
• Interns must complete all paperwork and pass a background check.

Internship opportunities are unpaid and housing opportunities are unavailable. Completion of an internship at the GSC does not come with the promise of future part-time or full-time employment.
