About the Veterinary Externship
The Greensboro Science Center offers a 2- or 4-week externship program in exotic, zoological, aquarium, and conservation medicine for fourth-year veterinary students in good academic standing.
Externs gain direct experience working with the GSC’s diverse animal collection alongside experienced veterinary staff in an AZA- and AAM-accredited facility.
Program Details:
- Length: 2- or 4-week rotations
- Schedule: Monday – Friday, full days (hours vary by case load)
- Location: Greensboro Science Center, Greensboro, NC
- Compensation: Unpaid (no housing or transportation provided)
- Health Requirement: Proof of a negative tuberculin skin test within 6 months of start date
- Expectations: Strong work ethic, professionalism, teamwork, and communication skills
The GSC follows the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine calendar and will post available rotation blocks as they are released.
What to Expect
Daily Schedule
Externs are scheduled for full-day rotations, Monday through Friday. Start and end times vary depending on animal care needs, medical procedures, and rounds. Expect hands-on experience across a range of species and departments, including zoological, aquatic, and laboratory settings.
Supervision & Mentorship
Externs will work directly with:
- Dr. Taylor Gregory – VP of Veterinary Health
- Sam Andreski – Hospital Manager and Registered Veterinary Technician
Together, they guide externs through clinical procedures, diagnostics, treatments, and preventive medicine for the GSC’s animal residents.
How to Apply
Application Materials
Please submit the following to externships@greensboroscience.org:
- Letter of Intent – include your available/requested dates and list a minimum of three rotation blocks in order of preference.
- Resume / CV
- One Letter of Recommendation – from a veterinary faculty member
Once your materials are received, the GSC veterinary team will review your application. Accepted applicants will receive next-step instructions, including required forms, TB documentation, and background check information. Rotation dates will be confirmed once all documentation is complete.
